Steam returns to Mt. Washington Cog Schedule for 2013

Memorial Day to kick off the Mt Washington Cog 2013 Steam Schedule

Steam returns to the slopes of the Northeast’s tallest peak this month. Starting on Memorial Day, May 27, 2013, one of the Mt. Washington Cog Railway’s small-scale 0-2-2-0s will climb the three miles of track to the 6,288 ft summit.

Just a few years ago, the Cog would fire up three or four steam locomotives everyday from April to October. With the arrival of four John Deere-powered diesels, steam has been a less frequent visitor to the top of Mt. Washington, but the railroad says it does not plan on getting rid of steam anytime soon. This year, like in years past, the Mt Washington Cog will run a steam-powered trip up the mountain at 8:15 a.m. on weekends in early June. After Fathers Day, steam will climb the hill every morning until October.

The Mt Washington Cog railway will host a Railfans’ Day on September 13, featuring a day of extra steam runs throughout the morning and afternoon, along with photo run-bys on the mountain.  Visit with the steam crew as they service the trains and enjoy guided museum tours and other events.

Special museum tours and steam demonstrations will also be available.

The Mt. Washington Cog opened in 1896 and is the world’s first cog railway.
