Amtrak Ocean View dome car rides again

Amtrak dome car to run fall trips

Amtrak’s fall schedule for its sole remaining dome car, the former Great Northern full length Ocean View dome car.

The former Great Northern No. 1391 was one of six full length domes built in 1955 by the Budd Company for the Chicago-Seattle/Portland Empire Builder operated by GN in partnership with Burlington Route and Spokane, Portland & Seattle.

About the “Great Dome” Car

The only remaining dome car in Amtrak service, car number 10031, is a Great Dome car previously used on the Chicago-Seattle Empire Builder when the train was operated by the Great Northern Railway and the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad (later the Burlington Northern Railroad).

It was built in 1955 by the Budd Company for the Great Northern and carried the name “Ocean View,” car number 1391. It was conveyed to Amtrak in 1971, with this car first being given the number 9361. It was renovated in 1985, renumbered 9300, and used in daily service on the Amtrak Auto Train to and from the Washington, D.C., and Orlando, Fla., areas through 1994. It was further refurbished in 1999, renumbered to 10031. This year, the “Ocean View” has been freshly re-painted in honor of Amtrak’s 40th Anniversary in the Amtrak Phase III paint scheme and wears stripes comprised of equal red, white and blue stripes, symbolic of Amtrak being America’s Railroad®.

As Amtrak No. 10031, the former Ocean View dome car will be operating this fall on the following schedule:

Adirondack train No. 69: Albany, N.Y. – Montreal Sept. 13-Oct 20: Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays;

Adirondack train No. 68: Montreal – Albany Sept. 14-Oct 21: Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

Cardinal train No. 50: Chicago – Washington Oct. 27, Nov. 3, Nov. 10: Saturdays only;

Cardinal train No. 51 Washington – Chicago Nov. 2, Nov. 9, Nov. 16: Fridays only.

    A friend of mine and I happened to board a Surfliner train headed north when we noticed that Ocean View was a part of our train. I figured that it was a special car reserved for a group, but when I asked, the conductor said it was open to all. So we hopped aboard and enjoyed a 55-mile ride home on it.

    Missed out when it was on the Chicago-Quincy run.
    Rode Empire Builder 3 times (1957, 1959, 1965) but car was reserved for 1st class and I was ticketed coach. (See my article in Trains magazine Nov. 2009 drovers Pass
