Union Pacific 844 is scheduled to make New Mexico trips for state centennial
Union Pacific 4-8-4 will visit the railroad’s New Mexico lines in November to commemorate the state’s centennial. The train will cross the former Rock Island “Golden State Route,” then the former Southern Pacific “Sunset Route.”
The Union Pacific 844 is housed at the Cheyenne, Wyoming Roadhouse. The 1944 Alco built 4-8-4 is the only one of 45 Northern type steam locomotives built for the Union Pacific Railroad still operating today.
The Union Pacific 844 New Mexico November schedule is as follows:
Nov. 4:
Tucumcari, 12 p.m.; engine will stay overnight.
Nov. 5:
Santa Rosa, 10 a.m.
Vaughn, 12 p.m.
Carrizozo, 3 p.m.
Alamogordo, 5 p.m.; engine will stay overnight
Nov. 6:
All day at Alamogordo
Nov. 7 and 8:
El Paso, Texas, all of both days
Nov. 9:
Santa Teresa, 10 a.m.
Deming, 1 p.m.
Lordsburg, 3 p.m.; engine will stay overnight
The Union Pacific Northern No. 844 was the last steam locomotive built for UP. It was saved in 1960 for excursion and public relations service, an assignment that continues to this day. UP No. 838 is stored at Cheyenne and is used as a source of parts for the 844.
