2012 Fall Train Excursions Nov. 3 & 4
The North Carolina Transportation Museum has announced it will operate two mainline fall train rides this November, from Spencer to Appomattox, Va., and Spencer to Toccoa, Ga.
Virginia Autumn Special
Saturday Nov. 3
The Virgina Autumn Special fall train excursion will depart from Spencer, North Carolina with additional passenger pick-up at the Greensboro Amtrak station. Passengers will disembark at the restored Appomattox station, once a stop for the South Side Railroad in the late 1800s, and now home to the Appomattox Visitor Information Center. This was the town where General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, ending the Civil War. Passengers can tour Appomattox’s downtown, or, for a nominal additional fee, explore either the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park or the Museum of the Confederacy. Shuttle buses will provide transportation to both sites.
The train will depart Spencer at 7 a.m., paused at Greensboro to receive passengers from 8 to 8:15 a.m., and arrive in Appomattox at noon. The special will depart at 2:45 p.m., stop in Greensboro from 6:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., and arrive in Spencer at 8 p.m.
Georgia Autumn Special
Sunday Nov. 4
The Georgia Autumn Special fall train excursion will again depart from Spencer, N.C., with an additional passenger pickup at the Spartanburg Amtrak station before traversing the former Southern Railway main line. Passengers will enjoy the area’s gala fall colors before crossing the 100-foot Seneca River trestle spanning Lake Hartwell to arrive at Toccoa, Georgia. Nestled into the foothills of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, the historic town will be bustling with activity during the 30th annual Harvest Festival. Passengers will have approximately three hours to enjoy the festival, which features handmade, handcrafted, and homegrown items from more than 200 vendors, as well as delicious regional foods, great entertainment on two stages, children and youth activities, buggy rides and much more.
The special will depart Spencer at 7:00 a.m., stop in Spartanburg from 9:30 to 9:45 a.m., and arrive at Toccoa at noon. The train will leave Toccoa at 3:00 p.m., stop in Spartanburg between 6:00 and 6:15 p.m., and arrive at Spencer at 8:00 p.m.
