Virginia’s Autumn Leaf Rambler train to run October excursions.

The Autumn Leaf Rambler train at Dillwyn, VA will begin running 3.5 hour round-trip excursions to New Canton on Saturday, October 6, 2012.

The Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historic Society is sponsoring a series of fall excursion trips over the Buckingham Branch Railroad.

Experience a historic and nostalgic journey into rural Buckingham County with all the excitement of bygone days of traveling by train from your seat in either the reclining seat coaches or the open air sightseeing cars. Departing from the picturesque Dillwyn Station, the vintage diesel powered train winds through the rolling hills and deep forests of an unspoiled landscape in the heart of Central Virginia. This trip also features a breathtaking view of the James River and will include a photo opportunity stop. The ideal family outing – picnic lunches welcome!

The Autumn Leaf Rambler train will depart from Dillwyn and follow the scenic James River. Two trains will operate each day on October 6, 13, and 20. Departures are at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., returning at 1 and 5 p.m., respectively. Fares are $28 for adults, and $14 for children ages 2-12. Children under two are free and boxed lunch included.

The Buckingham Branch operates 275 miles of former Chesapeake & Ohio track in three divisions, and is the largest short line railroad in Virginia. Amtrak’s Cardinal uses the Buckingham Branch line between Orange and Clifton Forge, Va.
